Jewellery and small sculptures, carved by hand from jade & opal
Natural stone + hands + time
Hi I’m John Coxon, an artist engaged in carving jade, art photography, painting and printmaking. Since 2010, I've been working with jade. Australian opal and other semi-precious stones — carving, shaping, polishing and creating ‘bo-ho’ style jewellery by hand. What begins as a raw, unremarkable rock slowly transforms under the tools, revealing the unique character locked inside.
Since 2010, I've been working with jade and other semi-precious stones — carving, shaping, and polishing each piece by hand. What begins as a raw, unremarkable rock slowly transforms under the tools, revealing the unique character locked inside. Creating jewellery and sculptures is a tactile process — slow, meditative, deeply personal. Every curve and reveals a story of the journey for a piece of stone. Some pieces are smooth and minimal. Others bear marks of their natural origin. None are identical.
Our name - Heart of Stone?
It might sound hard at first — but it’s not about coldness or indifference. It’s about the soul inside the stone. The quiet strength. The grounded heart. The connection to Mother Earth.
Each pendant, each sculpture, holds the history of the material, — its geological origins, cultural significance, and it’s journey from mountain to your hands.
Why jade & opal?
I was born in Aotearoa/New Zealand where jade is synonymous of our multi-cultural nation and for the past 25 years I have lived in Australia where opal is the national gemstone.
I work with jade, jadeite, opal and sometimes other stones — each chosen with care for its energy, texture, and provenance.
Made slowly. Worn meaningfully.
My customers want something more than mass-produced fashion. They’re drawn to authenticity, an earth connection, and the power of small rituals. They wear their pieces as amulets, reminders, grounding tools.
I sell jewellery I have made myself, as well as items made with love by other craft people. Just hands, heart, and stone.
Thank you for being here.
Whether you found me at a local market, on the Heart of Stone socials or stumbled across this little online corner, I’m glad you’re here. I hope you find something that speaks to you — something that feels as if it was made just for you.
– John Coxon, (maker, dreamer, stone shaper)
