"Hei Matau – Guardian of the Waters"
Hand-carved from light green British Columbian nephrite jade, this hei matau (fish hook) pendant carries deep ancestral significance rooted in Māori culture and reverence for the ocean. The hei matau is a powerful symbol of prosperity, protection, and connection to the sea—an emblem traditionally worn by those who lived by and relied upon the waters of Aotearoa for sustenance, navigation, and identity.

Historically, the matau was a functional tool used for fishing, later evolving into an adornment and talisman worn by Māori navigators and warriors. Today, it retains its mana (spiritual power), representing safe travel, strength, abundance, and a deep respect for nature’s cycles. To wear a hei matau is to carry the wisdom of the ocean, the resilience of voyaging ancestors, and the pull of distant horizons.

This piece is carved from British Columbian nephrite, a cousin to New Zealand’s own pounamu, sharing its toughness, beauty, and connection to stone-working traditions. The soft, translucent green of the jade reflects the life-giving waters and speaks gently of growth, renewal, and calm.

Smooth to the touch and cool against the skin, the pendant rests on an adjustable cord, designed to be worn close to the heart. It may bring the wearer a sense of groundedness, protection, and a quiet but enduring strength—as if the ocean walks with you, wherever you go.
